SecondStep
Grade levels 2 - 6th utilize the SecondStep curriculum to deliver social emotional learning. Each grade level consists of 4 main units that cover: emotion management, conflict resolution, bullying awareness, and goal setting/perseverance. These Social Emotional Learning classes are being implemented during a specials rotation. So similar to a gym class or an art class, students receive guidance class once during a 6 day rotation. Additionally, other grade levels incorporating guidance into their schedules that is new this year are K, 1st, 7th, and 8th.

Universal Screeners
We recently revisited and created updates to our comprehensive plan to identify and support social emotional and behavioral needs of our students. As part of our school’s safety and security criteria, what we are introducing this year are two universal screening tools. Our hope is that these two additional screenings will help provide a more preventative approach to the social emotional and behavioral needs of our students.
The first universal screener will be used for our Kindergarten students, the SRSS (Student Risk Screening Scale). For those that participated in Kindergarten registration, you probably remember the questionnaire that was provided through guidance. The information provided helped guidance navigate the students’ strengths and areas for growth to be successful in their first year of school.
The second universal screening that will be used for our students in grades 2, 4, and 6th. The screening tool is called the DESSA (Devereux Student Strengths Assessment). This screener is a two step screener that will be completed by our teaching staff. It is entirely strength-based and focuses on evaluating positive behaviors. We plan to screen our students once in the fall and once in the spring.
The screeners are a critical part in identifying students who may be in need of emotional or behavioral support such as small group intervention and other resources offered through our guidance department. As our teachers complete the screenings, families will be notified if their child is recommended for any additional support.
